It May Be Worth It To Challenge A Traffic Violation

The penalties for a speeding ticket or traffic violation may not seem serious, but the long-term consequences can be. Every traffic offense counts as points against your license, and they add up. I have observed many people simply paying the fine, pleading guilty or accepting the first deal that authorities offer to them. Only later do they regret the decision when it results in license suspension, a big hike in their car insurance and/or a criminal record.

The Scott L. Campbell Law Offices, LLC, may be able to fight that ticket in court or negotiate a much better outcome. I have handled hundreds of traffic offenses in Platte City and surrounding communities of Platte County. Call me at 816-866-8022 to discuss how I can help, no matter how cut and dried your situation may seem.

Experienced Defense For Traffic Offenses

I have practiced law in Platte County for over 30 years and was raised in the Northland. I am familiar with most of the roads, the local law enforcement agencies and judges who oversee these cases. I handle the full spectrum of traffic matters, including:

  • Speeding tickets
  • Distracted driving (cellphone use)
  • Reckless driving
  • Street racing
  • Illegal passing
  • Construction zone or school zone tickets
  • Driving without insurance
  • Driving without a valid license
  • Driving on a suspended or revoked license
  • Driving while intoxicated (DWI)
  • Leaving the scene of an accident (hit-and-run)

Some traffic offenses are misdemeanor crimes that carry the possibility of jail time and a criminal record, so it is critical to know where you stand before you plead guilty or make any statements to the police. (Paying the ticket is also an admission of guilt.)

Any combination of 12 points in one year or 24 total points in a three-year span can trigger license suspension. If you are reinstated after being suspended, the state of Missouri starts you at four points, meaning that you are on a “short leash” for future traffic offenses. My goal is to get your traffic ticket dismissed or knocked down to a lesser offense with fewer points or no points, in order to prevent those immediate or future consequences. I have the experience and good standing to negotiate with the prosecutor or argue your case before the judge, with a track record of favorable results.

Challenging The Traffic Stop Or Other Aspects

As with DWI cases, the initial traffic stop must have been for a reasonable suspicion. Probable cause applies to any subsequent searches or seizures after the stop, and the police are required to follow proper procedures. If evidence was obtained through an illegal search or an invalid search warrant, I will file a motion to suppress it in court. I will also fight to recover any unlawfully seized cash or property.
